Woman burnt by in-laws, in critical condition

TNN, Apr 1, 2010, 10.43pm IST

SURAT: A 23-year-old married woman was burnt in the bathroom of her house in the city's Katargam area on Wednesday allegedly by her in-laws, who locked her inside. The victim was rushed to SMIMER Hospital three hours later in a 108 ambulance called in by the neighbours.

The woman has suffered 80 per cent burns and is in a critical condition at the hospital. Police have registered a case of attempt to murder and physical and mental torture case against her husband and in-laws and arrested them.

As per the details of the case, Lata Jikadara, living in 65, Avdhoot Society at Katargam, was allegedly tortured by her husband and in-laws. She had married Hasmukh, a diamond worker, a year ago.

The victim in her statement from the hospital bed has alleged that she was harassed and beaten up regularly as her husband did not like her. She was once thrown out of the house, but returned after a compromise between the two families.

On Wednesday evening, her father-in-law Kanti Jikadara and mother-in-law Savita were in the house along with her. Kanti poured kerosene on her and Savita pushed the woman into the bathroom and then set her ablaze. Her screams for help were heard by the neighbours and someone called the ambulance, which took her to the SMIMER Hospital. She gave a statement against her husband and his parents along with two sisters Chaku and Vilas.

AS Shukla, police inspector of Katargam, who is investigating the case, said, "It is not a dowry-related case. Husband's dislike for her has led to this situation. The woman is in a critical condition. We have arrested the woman's husband and in-laws and have charged them with IPC sections 307 and 498(A)."
