A 30-year-old fashion designer lodged a case of dowry harassment against her husband and in-laws with the police here on Tuesday, a day after her return from the US, where the couple had been living for the past two years.

In her complaint made to Chandra Layout police, Manimala said that her husband Murali Shanmugham, aged 34, his parents Shanmugam and Krishnaveni, and brother Ganesh Kumar harassed her demanding dowry while the couple were in the US.

Murali had physically assaulted her during the past two years, police said, quoting the complaint. It was not immediately known whether Manimala had filed a complaint in the US.
Murali, an MBA graduate, was deputed to the US facility of his employer, a Mumbai-based US8.5 million company with a global presence.

The couple had earlier stayed in Chandra Layout for a couple of months before shifting to the US.
The police said that allegations against Murali's parents and brother might not be proved for want of evidence, since Manimala was staying abroad.

Manimala hailed from Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

"Murali's parents and brother were in Bangalore and we are trying to find out whether they were directly involved in harassing her," an investigating officer said.
Manimala said that the harassment began soon after their marriage in 2008. She was then staying with Murali's family in Chandra Layout in the city.

The police said they were searching for Murali and his family members.
The police, however, said they need more clarification on the complaint, and were trying contact Manimala.

After lodging the complaint, she left for Ahmedabad, where she was understood to be with her parents.
Sources in the police said that Manimala's was an arranged marriage. It was not known if dowry had changed hands at the time of her marriage.

Great, atleast Indian girls love India when it comes to dowry and dowry harassment cases. Otherwise they all look towards the west!
