Lawyer named in domestic violence case in Vastrapur
AHMEDABAD: A complaint of domestic violence was filed against a city-based lawyer by his second wife. According to Vastrapur police officials, Neelam Vakil, 27, got married to Rashmi Vakil, 41, last month. Vakil was Neelam's lawyer when she was seeking divorce from her first husband Mayur Rathod, a resident of Danilimda, on grounds of dowry and domestic violence. During the course of case proceedings, Vakil and Neelam became romantically involved. Vakil is a public prosecutor, said Vastrapur police.
"Vakil told her that he had got divorce from his wife Sharmishtha in 1999. However, he was very much in touch with her as he was attached to his two children from his first marriage. Neelam accepted the situation and proposed marriage. Vakil accepted and the couple got married on July 18. Neelam then started living with him at the government staff quarters in Vastrapur," said PM Parmar, sub-inspector of Vastrapur police station.
Vakil had, however, put two pre-conditions before Neelam for the relationship to work. First, he would live with his first wife and children for first four months of the marriage and would come to her only for the meals. Second, he would live with her after four months of marriage for weekdays and would go to his first wife and children on weekends. Though not completely happy with the arrangements, Neelam gave in.
"Trouble started when Neelam recently went to Gandhinagar for work. Vakil fought with Neelam because he was suspicious that she was having an extra-marital affair. Soon, another fight took place when Neelam's child from the first marriage came for visit. Vakil beat up the child. On Wednesday Neelam was again beaten up after a heated argument on the issue," said Parmar.
Police investigators said that they will record Vakil's statement in the case. "We will soon approach him to get to know his version of the events," said a senior Vastrapur police official.
